Types of Academic Programs


We have all kinds of programs to meet your educational needs, whether you want to earn a work credential, an associate degree, or even transfer to another institution, we’ve got it all. SVCC is a comprehensive institution of higher education, offering programs of instruction generally extending not more than two years beyond high school. Courses are offered in-person and online, ensuring that the College is able to meet the needs of students throughout our service area.

Types of programs SVCC offers include:

Occupational-Technical Education

The occupational and technical education programs are often referred to as Workforce programs because they are designed to meet the increasing demand for technicians, semi-professional workers, and skilled craftsmen for employment in industry, business, and government. Programs include preparation for entry employment in agricultural, business, engineering, health and medical, industrial, public service and other technical fields. The curricula are planned to meet the needs of employers in the service area.

 

Career Study Certificate

Awarded to students who complete a program that is less than one year in length and 9 to 29 credits. Programs are designed to lead to a work credential or a work skill. These courses often apply to the associated certificate level program.

 

Certificate

Awarded to students who complete a program that is usually less than two years in length and 30 to 59 credits. Programs are designed to lead to a work credential or work skill. These courses often apply to the associated degree level program.

 

Associate of Applied Science Degree (AAS)

The degree awarded to students majoring in one of the career or technical programs. This degree is typically two years in length and designed for students to go to work after graduation.

 

Associate of Arts and Sciences (AA&S)

The degree awarded requires courses typically taken in the first two years of a four-year degree. Students are urged to contact the school to which they will transfer to determine which courses they should take. Students should work closely with an SVCC advisor to plan their courses to meet their transfer needs.

 

College Transfer Education

The program of study which includes college freshman and sophomore courses in the Arts and Sciences and pre-professional programs meeting standards acceptable for transfer to baccalaureate degree programs at other institutions. Courses are equivalent to those provided in the first two years of a four-year degree college or university program. Through system-wide agreements, students who graduate from SVCC or any other of Virginia’s 23 community colleges with an associate degree and a specific minimum grade point average may obtain guaranteed admission to more than 20 of the Commonwealth’s colleges and universities. Dual Enrollment

Dual Enrollment is a great way for high-achieving high school students to meet the requirements for graduation while simultaneously earning college credit from Southside Virginia Community College. Dual Enrollment is a rigorous, but rewarding way to advance your college opportunities. Benefits of dual enrollment include:

  • A quality, affordable education close to home
  • Enriched course opportunities in academic coursework or in career and technical education
  • Students enter college with completed credits applicable to their degree program
  • Students gain an understanding of the rigor of college work as well as college faculty expectations
  • Access to college resources, facilities, and services such as advising and career counseling
