Outstanding Financial Debt to the College (Encumbrances)

Students who have an outstanding financial commitment to SVCC at the end of a semester will not be permitted to register and their records will be placed on hold (encumbered), which means that transcripts, recommendations, certificates, diplomas, or degrees will not be issued until the debt is paid.

Southside Virginia Community College complies with the Virginia Debt Collection Act (Code of Virginia, Sections 2.2-4800 through 2-2-4808, as amended).  Once your account becomes 60 days past due it will be sent to a collection agency and the Virginia Department of Taxation for collection.  If any debts are referred for collection to a collection agency or attorney, the Code allows interest, administrative charges, and penalty fees to be charged to the student. Students may be withdrawn from classes until the debt is paid.  Additionally, the College can deduct payment from a financial aid award made to the student. It is possible that a payment plan may be established, contact the Business Office for further information.
